It’s easy to create pity-inducing imagery. It was said that such photographs were offensive to the subjects in it, and didn’t respect their dignity. While at the same time, many said it was okay, as long as it helped raise money for a good cause.

To create positive and uplifting images, one has to include the true driving factors of such issues in the images. For example a six year old looking after her younger sibling could be termed “child labour”. However, by capturing the softer moments between siblings in their poor, unhealthy living conditions can be powerful enough to create awareness about their plight while also capturing the other side of the coin.

To put the issue in perspective, household chores carried out by children in their own homes, in reasonable conditions, and under the family supervision are an integral part of family life and growing up and are hence positive. Unfortunately, when these workloads interfere with children’s education or are excessive, they can be tantamount to child labour.
